Vigil for Europe

When the UK leaves the EU we won't give up working for a better future in Europe:

Join us on 31st January for a silent vigil to remember all that we are losing. Join us in thanking all those who stood with us. Join us in support and appreciation for all EU nationals who have chosen to make the UK their home. Join us in building a hope for a better future.

Meet at 10.15pm at Newcastle Civic Centre (outside St. Mary's Place entrance) for a silent walk to Monument and vigil at 11.00 pm when the UK leaves.

Bring a candle, lantern or a torch. Flags welcome.

Brexit isn't worth it.

December 13th

Thank you to everyone who worked or voted for candidates and parties who supported a People's Vote in the election on December 12th.

The Conservatives won a big majority of seats in Parliament, despite the fact that more than half (52%) of votes were for parties in favour of a referendum on the Brexit deal.

On December 20th Parliament started the process of passing the Withdrawal bill into law, and the UK is now almost certain to formally leave the EU on 31st January - but this doesn’t “get Brexit done” and there are still many issues to sort out in the coming months.

In a democracy there is no requirement for the losers in an election to change their minds. The Government have a right to govern and everyone has the right to think as they choose.

North East for Europe will continue to press for the closest possible relationship with countries of the European Union and will continue to support and press for the rights of all those who live in the North East, irrespective of nationality.

The results were not what we hoped for and we will be publishing some analysis and comment in the near future.

Lets turn Thursday into #StopBoris day

Thursday can be #StopBoris day

There are two really important things to do on Thursday

1) Vote:

Polling stations are open from 7am to 10pm - find your polling station

Not sure who to vote for? If you want to stop Boris and his bad Brexit deal you can visit getvoting.org to find out who has the best chance where you are

If you have a postal vote but haven't posted it yet, you can fill it in (don't forget to include the declaration!) and hand it in at your polling station or local Council.

2) Encourage others to vote:

  • Post on social media to remind people its polling day, and it is important to vote - whatever the weather! You can download and post our "I've voted tactically" badge

  • If you can, please go to help on one of the four constituencies in the North East where it is particularly important to stop the Tories:

Bishop Auckland - Darlington - Sedgefield - Stockton South

Find out where and how you can help at peoples-vote.uk/events We are asking people to back the Labour candidate in these four places - not because they are Labour, but because they back a People's Vote on any Brexit deal and they are the candidates who are in a position to stop the Tories.

  • If you can't get to one of these key constituencies, you can find out where you can help in your local area by contacting one of the political parties:

greenparty.org.uk - labournorth.com - libdems.org.uk

On December 12th you can help stop Brexit

But you need to be registered to vote - make sure you are registered by November 26th

www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

With intelligent tactical voting to make sure we all vote for the candidate best placed to oppose Brexit in each constituency, we can get rid of Boris Johnson as Prime Minister, get rid of his Brexit deal and get rid of Brexit.

Any form of Brexit will lead to more months and years of negotiation over trade deals that will never be as good as the ones we have now. Don't get Brexit done, lets get rid of it and get on with all the other issues that need to be dealt with.

North East for Europe in London

On October 19th hundreds of people from the North East joined hundreds of thousands of people from across the country to take part in the People's Vote march in London, calling on Parliament to give everyone a #finalSay on Brexit.

It's all very well for the prime minister and his supporters to talk about democracy, but nobody knows what the majority of voters want any longer - the referendum was over three years ago. There are two million people who couldn't vote in 2016 but are now able to vote and are entitled to have their say, and they easily outnumber the 1.4 million majority that the Leave campaign had in 2016. And that's before you take account of all those who might have changed their views now that we all know more about Brexit/.

Thank you to everyone who joined the march in London, and to all those who couldn't go but sent messages of support.

The law now requires the government to ask for another extension. North East for Europe and the People's Vote campaign are asking everyone who agrees with us to sign a new letter to the Government and to European leaders, calling on them to enable us all to have the final say on the Brexit deal.
